Since 1935, Virginia Tech students have gathered yearly to celebrate the achievements of the junior class during the Ring Dance. Since that time the Ring Dance tradition has evolved into an elaborate production, taking almost two years of planning and lots of money. This year the Class of 2006 will put on their Ring Dance themed Morocco by Moonlight in Squires Commonwealth Ballroom. This year, however, the dance will be missing a very important group of people. Every year the Corps of Cadets plays a special role in the ring traditions and festivities, but because the Army ROTC department of Virginia Tech is refusing to allow members of the junior class to return from training exercises, none of the cadets in Army ROTC will be present. In previous years the Army ROTC department has allowed cadets to return to campus for the Ring Dance before returning to the field. Despite months of advance notice, Army ROTC yet again scheduled this event during this celebration. Members of the Alumni Association, Cadets involved in the Ring Dance, and Army ROTC cadets have all protested and asked that the Army allow these students to return for this important tradition. Tech Alumni serving in Iraq have even expressed their displeasure over the whole situation. Despite all the effort, Army ROTC refuses to budge on the topic. In the last week of battle, the whole Class of 2006 asks that the Army Department realize how important this tradition is to tech students and allow our Army cadets to come back to attend the ring ceremonies.
