Childhood matters! Whether you are the first second or tenth victim of sexual abuse you should be entitled to a system that demands that if a perpetrator is found guilty, it is expected they will do a fair time for their crime. At the moment if a child abuser is found guilty of a second or third offence, they often get concurrent sentences. This means that if the original sentence was a longer one they will not serve eve one extra day for the second conviction. This is wrong. It makes the victim that was strong enough to survive the abuse and went through the tough legal process to relive the moments and get a gulty verdict that their childhood had no value, It stops people from coming forward, which puts more perpetrators on our streets which puts our children at risk and it lets the perpetrator know that if he is awaiting trial for a major crime and is likely to be found guilty, he may increase the chance of reoffending while awaiting trial as likelihood is he will only get a concurrent sentence . This is very dangerous. An example is one Clare man who was given a 3 yr concurrent sentence for sexually assaulting an 8 yr old. Because he had a previous conviction with a longer sentence this new guilty verdict will not even give him one extra day for the crime he committed to that 8 yr old. What message does that give to her? She has gone through it all for othing. Change and proper accountability for these low-lives is well over-due. No more concurrent sentences. Childhood matters! They need to pay more for the second crime not less and not time that they got for someone else. Protect our kids!
