Petition to Stop the Banning of the Burqa

Action Petitioned For:

We, the undersigned, wish to express our opposition to the proposed legislation introduced by senator Fred Nile banning full face coverings in public. Since the majority of Islamic jurists and scholars both past and present have held the view that the covering of the face for a woman is a legislated act of worship and NOT a mere custom, the imposition of the proposed legislation will be widely viewed by many Muslim women as a severe infringement upon their right to manifest their religious convictions.
As this proposed legislation threatens to create serious divisions between the members of the Muslim community and their fellow Australians, stir up anti-Islamic sentiment and further alienate many Muslim women from the rest of Australian society we condemn this bill in the strongest of possible terms.
