July 6th 2005.

We, the undersigned individuals and organizations, are committed to social justice, peace and communal harmony. In recent years, we have worked hard to bring together communities, to build back the trust that was destroyed by the many instances of communal riots and carnage, specially the events of 2002.

We believe that misdeeds, even if purportedly directed against any one community, should be the concern of all people. We do not treat injustices as being community-centric but as injustice at large.

On behalf of people of all communities who take this view, we condemn the alleged terrorist attack at the Babri Masjid- Ramjanam Bhoomi site in Ayodhya on the morning of July 5th 2005.

We urge leaders of all communities, political parties, civil society groups, the youth and the people of this city to not view the incident as being an attack on a particular communitys sentiments but rather as an attack on the consistent work done by peace activists in building bridges between communities. We urge also that the incident not be politicized for narrow electoral gains.

In order that the trust between communities is not destroyed, we urge that the concerned authorities investigate and disclose the complete truth of the matter at the earliest. This is the only way vested interests can be prevented from misusing the situation to disturb the peace.

We, as peace-workers, pledge that we will continue to bring people together and not let this weak attempt to derail the process dampen our spirits.
