Action to initiate a curbside-recycling program in the City of Savannah is long overdue. Savannah is in a minority in this country. The majority of municipalities in the United States have successful curbside recycling programs. There is absolutely no economic or social reason that a curbside-recycling program would not work in Savannah.
Recycling allows us to get the most out of our resources and to maintain a sustainable relationship between economics and stewardship for our environment. Besides deriving the maximum amount of value from resources, recycling also reduces or prevents emissions to air and water, saves energy and natural resources and reduces greenhouse gas emissions from landfills and toxic particulates from waste incinerators.
New technologies and markets are developing every day with the sole aim to take advantage of reclaimed resources. Industry in this country has made a commitment in dollars to find ways to process and manufacture recycled materials, and the supply of recyclables placed at the curb support those, and ultimately a growing sector of our national economy.
Savannah has a commitment to support the efforts of sustainability. Currently, its waste to energy practices are advancing the largest polluter in Chatham County and contributing to a pollution problem that has landed this historic city in the top percentage of dirtiest places to live as well as adversely affecting the health of its citizens and its environment.
It is time, Savannah, to stand up for what is right. The right thing to do is to initiate a curbside-recycling program.
