Reduce Excessive Road Tax on Diesel Vehicles

The constant hikes in the price of diesel fuel in Malaysia are placing a double burden on owners of diesel powered vehicles. The government of Malaysia has stated that it is committed to removing or reducing significantly fuel subsidies in this country. Over a period of time, it is clear that the price of diesel will continue to rise at rates higher than petrol prices and will reach similar levels to the price of petrol.
Datuk Seri, this petition is not a comment on the appropriateness of this policy. However, we want to point out that it has resulted in an unfair burden on diesel vehicle owners.
You should be aware that the current road tax for such vehicles is very much higher than that of similar capacity vehicles with petrol engines. One known reason for this sharp disparity is no longer true. Improvements to diesel engine technology ensure that these vehicles no longer emit significantly higher levels of polluting emissions. However, because the price of diesel was kept low previously, diesel vehicle owners did not dispute the unwarranted disparity in road tax rates.
That is no longer the case. We are now burdened with high prices for diesel. We are now, unfairly, being doubly punished with soaring diesel prices and a high road tax rate.
Datuk Seri, diesel vehicle owners are suffering and in need of a remedy.
We call upon you to bring to an end this unreasonable practice. Road tax rates for diesel vehicles should be reduced immediately and brought on par with petrol vehicles.
