Request to Join LinkedIn Groups Emails

1 Owners are spending tens of millions of hours annually on an unpaid basis to create, promote, shape and manage their community groups on LinkedIn.
2 This provision of free time has resulted in millions of members joining LinkedIn and represents a massive financial benefit to the private shareholders of LinkedIn Corporation.
3 The vast majority of the owners of the largest communities have owned those communities since groups were first launched in September 2008. At that stage, all owners were given two critical access rights: the right to view and export the emails of all their members; and the right to search and view a complete member directory at no cost.
4 LinkedIn Corporation has now withdrawn each of those access rights, most recently by preventing community owners from viewing the email addresses of those requesting to join their groups.
5 Checking email addresses is a fundamental step in the application process for tens of thousands of professional bodies, alumni networks and others with restricted membership.
We believe that, had community owners been aware that LinkedIn Corporation would unilaterally withdraw these access rights without consultation, few of them would have devoted as much time to managing their communities or encouraged as many of their contacts to join those communities.
We therefore urge LinkedIn Corporation to resume the display of new member email addresses to those group owners that are willing to commit formally that they will respect the privacy of the members of their own communities.
