You may not know what CFCs are, or why I feel it is important to bring back the production of them, but I hope that after I explain the situation, you will join me in this cause.
I am going to explain what CFCs are, why we need them, why they are banned, why this petition is here, etc..
What are CFCs?
"CFCs" is short for "Chlorofluorocarbons".
What are they used for/in/as?
CFCs are used in air conditioning, heating, refrigeration, surgical sterilizers, fire-fighting agents, and plenty more areas as well.
Where do CFCs come from, and what [more] are they?
CFCs are human-made substances that are incredibly useful! And they are very efficient too. They are also non-toxic, which is amazing, and definitely a good thing for the world. CFCs actually don't interact with any organisms, except for a few that break them down. However, no organism is harmed by them.
Why were they banned?
CFCs have not been banned from use yet; only the production of them. This means that nobody is allowed to make CFCs anymore. Once the CFCs we have now are all used up, we will not have ANY more.
Why has CFC production been banned?
This is because they are part of the reason why there is a "hole" in the Ozone layer (Stratosphere).
First of all, they are only a VERY small portion of what's causing this supposed "hole". And second of all, since the "hole" only appears four months out of the entire year, it would be pointless to not use CFCs the other months, since they are not affecting anything! Also, this "hole" only appears over Antarctica, and since they are human-made, CFCs could not be a major cause of it anyway.
What will happen when CFCs are eliminated?
Death. Exactly that. The government believed that we would save lives because the ozone "hole" would decrease in size, but they are wrong. We will lose significantly MORE lives.
Why is this?
Well, this is because CFCs are very efficient compared to other methods. For instance, since they are part of efficient refrigeration, we will lose that, causing what? Food poisoning. Also, because CFCs are part of fire-fighting agents, fires will take longer to extinguish, which will cause more deaths and more property loss. Then there are surgical sterilizers in which CFCs are very, very useful. Without them, there will be more infections on people after surgery, etc., so we will lose, yet again, MORE lives! Even a big supporter of the CFC ban (Robert Watson) even admitted in 1993 "...probably more people will die from depleting ozone."
What is the point of this petition?
It's probably already obvious by now, but I will try to explain further into it, and also in case you don't understand.
CFCs are basically essential to many lives! That's just putting it in basic terms. Without them, as you have noticed, we will lose many lives.
Legislators are very poorly educated in the science department. This is definitely noticed. None of them even know the details of the "ozone hole", which is not a good thing at all!
So, the point of this petition is to gain support in saving lives and educating government leaders (such as the president) about how much we need CFCs. We want to bring back the production of CFCs. By succeeding at this, we will protect many people from dying at young ages in the future of things that could have been prevented with CFCs.
Let me put it this way: If you were to go into surgery for some reason, and there were no CFCs, you would have more likely of a chance of dying, or at least obtaining a dangerous infection, than you would if they still had CFCs. To shorten this (so I don't have to go back over everything), you will have a higher chance of dying sooner, and witnessing a greater destruction of this world, when there are no CFCs left than [now] when there are still CFCs around.
Yes, this is all very true.
Even if you aren't still living when we run out of CFCs, think about your children and grandchildren, and generations that follow, who would be in the danger of this horrible situation. So, I ask you, do you want to live in a world like this, and do you want your descendants living like this? I know I definitely don't.
