Parents, Neighbors and Friends of P.S. 251Q,
Another year has past and we, the parents of P.S 251, find ourselves in the same predicament as in years past where will our children attend school next year? Last year, many parents put their childrens names in for the lotteries at various schools and crossed their fingers in hopes that their child would have the winning number. This is not an acceptable solution to a problem that can be so easily resolved.
P.S. 251 has been a tradition in our community since 1972. This school is well known and respected for fostering early childhood learning and providing a nurturing environment for younger students. Most of us have chosen P.S. 251 because we dont feel comfortable having our five and six year old children in the same schools as pre-teens.
In June 2006, P.S 251 will have approximately 80 third graders who will be moving up to the fourth grade. It is mind boggling to think that since the New York City Department of Education has known about this situation for several years now, that a feeding pattern into one or more schools has not yet been established. A feeding pattern must be established in order to maintain the integrity of P.S. 251. Parents will soon opt not to send their children to P.S. 251 at all so that they wont have to deal with the placement issue later on down the road. And of course the end result would be that the school would be shut down.
We have written numerous letters and emails, and made phone calls, and have been continuously told that our children must return to their zoned schools, and this year, we will not accept that answer. We demand that our children be given seats in top performing schools in Region 3. Lets solve this problem once and for all!
