Due to higher education budgetary cutbacks and constraints, San Francisco State University is about to lose an important part of its academic, cultural, and educational community. Master Danongan Kalanduyan has been teaching the traditional music and dance of the Southern Philippines at SFSU since January of 2003. He is an internationally recognized musician who has won numerous awards such as the prestigious 1995 National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, which was presented to him at a formal ceremony at the White House.
Kulintang music has survived for over a thousand years and has been known to be the music of the resistance. It is an important art form that survived Philippine colonization and which promotes and symbolizes the rich heritage of the Philippines. SFSU has a national living treasure in the ranks of its distinguished faculty. It is imperative that the administration acknowledges the enormous value of ETHS/MUS/DANC 545 by reinstating it as a part of its course offerings.
