------------------------

In order to preserve and protect the integrity of the historic Princeton Battlefield, a National Historic Landmark, for posterity, we the undersigned petitioners request immediate action by the government to acquire, through eminent domain, approximately thirty five acres of the historic Princeton Battlefield threatened by development by the current owner, The Institute for Advanced Study.

The thirty five acres in question are open fields which run along the Princeton Battlefield State Parks eastern border and are zoned for single family housing. This is the site of significant fighting during a critical stage in the battle when George Washington rallied the Continental Army and mounted a counter attack which swept the British from the field. The Institute for Advanced Study has filed plans to build faculty housing on this hallowed ground where American patriots fought and died. We want this threatened land protected and integrated into the Princeton Battlefield State Park.

The Battle of Princeton, fought on January 3, 1777, was one of the most fiercely fought battles of the American Revolution and gave George Washington his first field victory over British troops. It is also the first major land action for the US Marine Corps and it is where they suffered their first casualties. The present Princeton Battlefield State Park encompasses only eighty five acres of the original battlefield, a fraction of the original ground upon which the battle took place.

As concerned citizens we urge that you do everything in your power to preserve this sacred ground where the American Army and Marine Corps, under the leadership of George Washington, won a critical victory over the British and resulted in the abandonment of New Jersey by the British Army.
