Save the British Council Language Assistantship Scheme

Background:

For 105 years, the British Council has provided the opportunity for language students to work as assistants in schools across 15 different countries worldwide. Many students and university language departments now rely on this scheme to enable students to successfully complete their compulsory year abroad.

As part of our new Governments spending review, the British Council has been asked to suspend this scheme, which costs a mere 750,000 a year to administer. The suspension of this invaluable scheme would have devastating consequences for many current and future students year abroad plans, not to mention international relations and the transmission of British culture abroad.

Petition:

We, the undersigned, demand that the Government reverse their short-sighted and ignorant move and allow the British Council to proceed with applications for the next academic year.
