Cork is an important centre of Classical studies in the south of Ireland and deserves an individual, distinctive identity. The department is in danger, and we need your support to save it!
Current restructuring plans would involve the Department of Ancient Classics being incorporated within the School of History and, worse, losing its identity as a separate Department. This petition serves three purposes:
(1) It demonstrates the support that the discipline of Classics commands from both professionals and amateur enthusiasts, in Ireland and abroad
(2) It proves that an independent department would be viable, by demonstrating the level of interest in Classics on a national and worldwide scale
(3) It shows the loss of face University College Cork would endure among the community of scholars if it were to sacrifice such a well-regarded and well-supported department
