Within the next two weeks the city of New Westminster is planing to build a new bus bay and expand 8th avenue in order to do this they wish to remove 3 or 4 Cherry blossom trees (Sakura trees). I do not agree with this and I shall list the points for saving the trees.
- They add beauty to the city.
-They clean pollution.
- They provide shade and a sound barrier.
-They are a habitat for animals.
-They are important culturally. We even have a Vancouver cherry blossom festival.
-They have been here for 20+ years.
Arguments against the traffic
- The area has a park with a speed limit of 30km/h just before it.
-There is a high school across the street.
-There is an old folks home down the street.
As such there should not be much need to keep the traffic flowing it is a slow residential zone with a school and park. The cars can’t and should not be speeding and should obey the law and wait for the bus. Adding the bus bay will not alleviate the traffic as it is already so highly congested. The bus will simply get stuck trying to pull away it still needs the same amount of space on the road. New Westminster’s roads have been suffering since the toll bridge opened and our city needs to reduce traffic not expand roads to welcome it, nor cut down trees to increase pollution from the traffic.The core issue here is Increased traffic heading to the Pattullo bridge. Should we sacrifice our city and our health for increased speed of traffic? I say no.
