Scientists for Gaza

We, the undersigned, as scientists and members of universities, express our utmost concern and condemnation of the current Israeli attacks in Gaza strip. This is a clear violation of international law, specifically the Fourth Geneva Convention "relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War" (1949).

We cannot remain silent as we receive mails from our colleagues in Gaza, such as
- Suleiman Baraka, astrophysicist in Gaza, who got his PhD in IAP (Institut dAstrophysique de Paris) and also spent one month in the institute in September 2008. He completed a postdoc in USA, National Institute of Aerospace, and was planning to go back to Gaza to open a research centre in physics. He wrote to us that, after a F16 strike, his house has blown up and swept away, his mother is injured and his 10 years old son is in coma;
- Ziad Medoukh, chief of the French department in Gaza Al-Aqsa university and coordinator of the university peace centre. While he obtained a grant from the French government to study in Paris 8 university, he was not allowed by the Israeli army to leave Gaza. His two cousins and three neighbours are dead in the bombing. After their funeral, he witnessed: The Israeli army is on its way to destroy Gaza, it bombards everything: schools, mosques, universities, houses, shops, hospitals, police stations and ministries;
- Students and members of the Islamic university, located on the centre of Gaza, and bombed throughout the night of December 28th.

We are convinced that our individual and official collaborations with researchers and universities in Palestine, and in Gaza, contribute to the peace and communication between people.
In the light of the above, we call on our governments
 to condemn the attack,
 to make pressure on the UN to take actions to restore international peace and security , on behalf of the Chapter VII of its charter.

Furthermore, we ask for
 the end of the siege on Gaza,
 the free movement of Palestinians, including students and researchers

Nous, universitaires et scientifiques, sommes bouleversйs et indignйs par les attaques menйes par Israлl sur la bande de Gaza, en violation du droit international en temps de guerre, et en particulier de la quatriиme convention de Genиve (1949) relative а la protection des civils.

Nous ne pouvons rester silencieux alors que nous recevons quotidiennement des messages de nos collиgues de Gaza, tels que
- Suleiman Baraka, chercheur en astrophysique а Gaza, qui a obtenu son doctorat а lIAP (Institut dastrophysique de Paris) et y a passй un mois en septembre 2008. Il poursuit sa formation dans le cadre dun post-doctorat aux Etats-Unis, National Institute of Aerospace, et espиre ouvrir un centre de recherche en physique а Gaza а son retour. Il nous йcrit que sa maison a йtй dйtruite, sa mиre blessйe et son fils de 10 ans en йtat de coma profond, aprиs une attaque de F16 israйlien ;
- ou Ziad Medoukh, chef du dйpartement de franзais de luniversitй Al-Aqsa de Gaza ; et coordinateur du centre de la paix de luniversitй. Interdit de sortie par larmйe israйlienne, alors quil bйnйficie dune bourse dйtudes du gouvernement franзais dans le cadre dune convention avec lUniversitй Paris 8, il tйmoigne, aprиs avoir suivi lenterrement de deux de ses cousins et de trois de ses voisins : Larmйe israйlienne est en train de dйtruire Gaza, elle bombarde tout : йcoles, mosquйes, universitйs, maisons, magasins, hфpitaux, postes de police et ministиres ;
- ou encore les йtudiants et universitaires de lUniversitй islamique, situйe en plein centre de Gaza, et bombardйe dans la nuit du 28 dйcembre, au point de raser cinq bвtiments sur treize.

Parce que nous sommes convaincus que nos collaborations individuelles et institutionnelles avec les chercheurs et universitйs en Palestine, et а Gaza en particulier, contribuent а un monde de paix et de comprйhension entre les peuples,

nous demandons а nos gouvernements
 De condamner cette attaque,
 De faire pression sur lONU pour quelle prenne des actions pour restaurer la paix et la sйcuritй internationale , au titre du chapitre VII de la Charte.

Nous demandons йgalement
 La levйe immйdiate et totale du blocus sur Gaza
 La libre circulation des Palestiniens, en particulier les йtudiants et universitaires
