In 1997, a spate of police shootings galvanized our community in support of independent civilian review of abuse and misconduct allegations toward the very individuals charged with keeping us safe. Three years later, the US Commission on Civil Rights published a report reiterating those calls. Now, nearly a decade later, those calls have yet to be answered, and yet another member of our community has fallen.
We do hereby call for the implementation of an independent, community based review board, to ensure that never again will such tragedies go unanswered.
