Dear Mr. Ashlock:
On behalf of the thousands of Arab-American and Muslim-American citizens of Southern California, we are writing to insist upon a formal apology from KFI 640 AM and Clear Channel Broadcasting for your stations inflammatory and offensive comments regarding Palestinians and Arabs made on The Bill Handel Show on Wednesday, June 27, 2006 at approximately 6:45am.
In the segment, the commentators (Hoffman, Marotta and others) of The Bill Handel show were discussing how President Mahmoud Abbas is the only sane Palestinian because he recognizes the crushing strength of the Israeli army and therefore is calling for the immediate release of the Israeli soldier. They specifically referred to Abu Mazen as the king of sanity of the insane people and then laughed in an insolent manner.
We sincerely hope that you recognize that generalizing an entire group of any race or ethnicity in this manner is extremely offensive and is unacceptable. In fact, the comments were racist and show a biased prejudice against Arabs and Muslims worldwide. As Arab American citizens, we fully value and respect the right to freedom of speech, however, HATE SPEECH and such inflammatory, offensive, and outrageous comments should not be perpetuated on any airwaves and will absolutely not be tolerated.
The comments made on The Bill Handel Show clearly serve to incite and increase the already mounting animosity and hostility toward Arabs and Muslims worldwide who are not insane, as your radio personalities stated. We ask that you show us the same type of respect given to other racial and ethnic groups and NOT make derogatory and polarizing racial statements.
We hope that you and your management agree that such behavior and comments are unprofessional and un-AMERICAN. We will follow up to discuss what immediate next steps you will take to confirm an on-air apology to the Arab-American and Muslim-American community from KFI 640 AM and Clear Channel.
