We wish to defend the democratic wish of the student AGM which banned arms corporations from our student buildings and supported the gains of the student sit-in that secured Palestinian scholarships, and the advertisement of the DEC aid appeal.
OUR EDUCATION SHOULD NOT BE TO THE DETRIMENT OF OTHERS
After a 24 hour occupation of Registry; three negotiation sessions with the university authorities and a students' association that opposed the actions, we managed to win a series of promises from the University administration:
- The Eden Springs contract has been CANCELLED
- Scholarships will be provided for 1-3 (and potentially more) Palestinian students
- The DEC appeal will be publicised on campus and on the University homepage
- The University will re-establish its link with the University of Gaza
Following from this we passed a motion at the Students Union AGM, where for the first time in 12 years quorum was reached, stating:
- That the AGM believe's that the occupation of Gaza is unlawful, as is the commercial exploitation of the conflict by any company.
- That by building ties with companies such as Eden Springs and BAe, the University and it's students are complicit in the occupation of Gaza
- And that none of the activites by the students and/or university staff must contribute, directly or indirectly, to the occupation of Gaza and it's commercial exploitation.
