We have been watching the recent events in Syria with deep sorrow and pain. Since the need for political and social radical reform in Syria has become an urgent and pressing matter, people in Syria decided to proceed with peaceful protests calling for freedom and democracy, which they lacked for 40 years.
While the Government officially declared that they would allow peaceful protests to take place, the security forces continued to crack down on protesters, arresting and killing hundreds, including minors and children. Many cases were reported of pressuring Syrian local hospitals to deny emergency care access to traumatized protesters. The security forces are forcing these hospitals to refuse wounded people for care. Recently the Government, through its security forces, started to detain many medical doctors who had helped wounded people or even worked in hospitals where injured protesters were treated. Numbers of these cases are dramatically increasing every day. As doctors, we must remember the oath we have taken upon receiving our certification, that we are committed to treat the patients with the required methods of care to the best of our abilities. Hence, the Syrian and international laws protect our job. It is absolutely saddening for us to watch the doctors in Syria being arrested and detained for performing their holy duties in one of the most critical and emergency circumstances our beloved country is facing. We call upon the President of Syria and his current Government to release the detained doctors immediately. We will continue to provide the health care duties to our Syrian people regardless of their racial, religious and ethnic backgrounds. Sincerely, Syrian Physicians
