Take a stand against HIV discrimination and stigma in Asian and Pacific Islander (A&PI) communities.
The Banyan Tree Project was formed to promote acceptance and fight HIV-related discrimination and stigma in A&PI communities in the U.S. Sponsored by San Francisco-based Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center and in collaboration with partner organizations across the U.S., the Banyan Tree Project is collecting signatures for The First Annual National A&PI HIV/AIDS Awareness Day on Thursday May 19, 2005. Our goal is to obtain 2,005 Banyan Tree Pledge signatures.
The Banyan Tree Pledge
I believe...
1. All A&PIs deserve access to quality HIV care, testing, treatment and prevention in their native languages, regardless of their immigration or economic status.
2. A&PIs who are living with HIV/AIDS and A&PI lesbians, gays, bisexuals,and transgenders should be treated with dignity.
3. Discussion of sexual health, reproductive health, and safer sex should be open, accurate and support informed decision-making especially among young people, who make up half of all new HIV infections in the U.S.
4. Health and HIV data on A&PIs should be reported by ethnicity in order to deepen our understanding of the HIV epidemic and to strengthen the ability of health providers to meet community needs.
5. The U.S. government has a responsibility to fulfill and increase its commitment to fight HIV/AIDS in the U.S. and the growing pandemic in the Asia Pacific Region.
