"The Jazz Singer" on DVD Petition

Alan Crosland's 1927 classic "The Jazz Singer" is a milestone in motion pictures. It was the first feature-length film to feature sound. It was Al Jolson's first starring role in a feature film. "The Jazz Singer" is one of the most recognizable films of all time, and has been applauded for it's beautiful story, wonderful acting, and great music. The film has recently approached its 78th anniversary (Oct 6). There are many fans of this classic film who all want to see it get the treatment it deserves on DVD.

In both Regions 1 and 2, there has never been an official DVD release of the original film version of "The Jazz Singer." This cinematic classic is long overdue for its first digital release. A Special Edition of the film would not be too much to ask. Surely, the time has come for this classic to be digitally restored and remastered and presented in its fullest quality?

A 2-disc release of the film could also house many extras, including all available advertising material (trailers, posters, etc.), but also some rare items directly related to the film, such as "Mammy's Boy," the 1923 Al Jolson short film which made use of early synchronized sound, "The Singing Fool," Jolson's 1928 follow-up to The Jazz Singer which also hasn't made it to the DVD format yet, and also the Looney Tunes shorts "I Love to Singa" (directed by Tex Avery) and "Any Bonds Today?" (directed by Bob Clampett), both of which spoof scenes from "The Jazz Singer."

We believe that "The Jazz Singer" is a classic and historic piece of cinema. We only want what we deserve. Please consider the fact that many illegal bootlegs of the film are being sold online, and that the refusal to release this film on DVD is causing you to lose money. Fans of "The Jazz Singer" do not want to spend their money on pirate DVDs, but many of us have to because we so badly want to own this great film. The fans deserve better. Give us the DVD release that we deserve.
