As we have seen in Europe and Africa, there is a huge global refugee crisis. Canada is accepting an embarrassingly low number of asylum seekers in comparison to some of our European counterparts. We can't allow refugees who have risked their lives to escape horrendous conflict and violence to be left living in dire, unsafe and inhumane conditions. We must help
With an estimated 800,000 asylum applications, Germany has the the largest number of projected new asylum claims in this year alone. Last year the USA was 2nd with 121,200 asylum applications, followed by Turkey (87,800), Sweden (75,100), and Italy (63,700). By comparison, in recent years, Canada has granted asylum to less than 2000 refugees with a commitment to accept only 10 000 more by 2017. Considering that at this point there are almost 4 million refugees seeking asylum from Syria alone, and 7.6 million who are internaly displaced, we must do more.
