Freedom for the Political Prisoners in Syria

Some were brought before "State Security Courts", where the minimum standards of justice are absent, and were summarily sentenced for many years. Others were simply imprisoned without trial under a martial "decree" that has been in effect since March 1963.
A prominent leader of the democratic movement, Riad Al-Turk, spent almost 18 years in solitary confinement, without having ever been tried; he became known as the Syrian Mandela. He was released in 1998, and imprisoned again in September 01, 2001. He is 71 years old, and suffers from several illnesses.
We call for the immediate release of all political prisoners in Syria, or their trial before civilian courts with full respect for their human and legal rights under the Syrian constitution.
