Honorable Mayor Mr. Bloomberg:

On behalf of people of Indian and Bangladeshi origin we would like to forward a proposal to you to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore--- the great Indian poet, philosopher, humanist and educator. Tagores 150th birth anniversary will be celebrated all over the world on 7th May, 2011 by many international organizations.
Tagore was born on 7th May, 1861 in Calcutta, India. He received the Nobel Prize in literature in 1913 for his collection of poems Gitanjali. During his lifetime he visited America five times giving lectures on his philosophy of life and global affairs. During his last visit to America in 1930, he was given a heros welcome back by New York City people. Also, he was given a private interview with president Hoover and was introduced by the British Ambassador.

During the sixty seven days of his final trip to the USA, The New York Times published twenty one reports on him, including two long interviews and a historic photograph of him and Albert Einstein captioned: A mathematician and a mystic meet in Manhattan. When Tagore spoke at Carnegie Hall in front of an audience of 4000 people, thousands had to be turned away. A dance performance was given at the Broadway Theater by Ruth St. Denis as a benefit for his open air university Santiniketan which is being considered this year by UNESCO for declaration as a World Heritage Center.

To honor Tagore on his birth centenary (7th May 1961), Times Square in New York City was named Tagores Square for one day. Mr. Robert F. Wagner Jr. was mayor of New York City at that time. Elsewhere in the country the hundredth anniversary of the poets birth was celebrated with due deference and a lot of nostalgia.

We would like to request you to re-declare Times Square as Tagores Square on the 7th of May 2011 for the day. In addition, pictures of him could be shown on the giant digital screen at 1 Times Square. Also, a small cultural event could be organized by your cultural office on behalf of New York City to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.
