National Flag of Canada Day

Call upon Prime Minister Jean Chrйtien to immediately introduce a bill in the House of Commons of Canada to establish the second Monday in February as a statutory national holiday known as National Flag of Canada Day.
National Flag of Canada Day would commemorate the first official raising of the Maple Leaf Flag on February 15, 1965, and would celebrate what that flag has come to stand for. The single red maple leaf, with its deep roots as a symbol in both English and French Canada, now flies proudly over the most diverse and tolerant country in the world.
National Flag of Canada Day would also create a much-needed long weekend falling roughly halfway between Christmas and Easter, a welcome break during our longest season.
We call on Prime Minister Jean Chrйtien, who was one of the 163 members of parliament who voted in favour of the maple leaf flag when it became law on December 15, 1964, to introduce National Flag of Canada Day legislation as his parting gift to the Canadian people he has served so faithfully and so well.
