Open Pomona: Opposing Dorm Access Restrictions

Considering the proposed access restrictions pertaining to the new north campus Pomona College dormitories to be opened in summer 2011, which will limit access to the residential areas of the new dorms to only those students who reside in the dorms,
The ASPC Residence Hall Committee, composed of nine student representatives and a number of Residence Advisors (RAs), does hereby recommend the following:
1. that the proposed access restrictions in the new dorms be revised such that all current students of Pomona College may access the general common areas and all floors and common hallways of the new dorms using a Pomona College identification card, and
2. that access to residential suites in the new dorms, composed of two or more student rooms and a suite-specific common area, which comprise the entire residential structure of the new dorms, continue to be restricted to only the students that live within those suites.
It is the belief of the ASPC Residence Hall Committee that these revised access guidelines for the new dorms will preserve the free-flowing intellectual and social environment that so defines Pomona College, while also maintaining the high security standards of the new dorms as intended through the original proposed access restrictions.
This committee would like to emphasize that this recommendation reflects the opinion of the ASPC Residence Hall Committee, whose members have been elected and appointed to represent the interests of the entire student body of Pomona College.
