Please DO NOT Execute Cheong Chun Yin

We, the undersigned, plead to the Honorable Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore Mr Lee Hsien Loong, to advise the Honorable President not to sign the order for Cheong Chun Yin to be executed, who is a Malaysian citizen sentenced to death for drug offences, on the following grounds:-

1. Chun Yin was asked to bring gold bars into Singapore, and that he genuinely believed that was so. He had no knowledge that the supposed gold bars were in fact drugs. It never occured to him that the gold bars had turned into drugs as he had been told over and over again that he was to bring in gold bars and nothing happened along the way to suggest otherwise.

2. Chun Yin has provided all information relating to the person, that is Lau De, who convinced him and arranged for everything, to the relevant authority, but the police did not make adequate efforts to trace Lau De or check on his cell-phones, as admitted by the Learned Trial Judge in his judgment.

3. Should the relevant authority have made such efforts, they would probably have traced the drug barons; should the relevant authority have made such efforts, they would have known that what Chun Yin testified in court was the truth.

4. The Learned Trial Judge has nevertheless found that, It was immaterial that the CNB did not made adequate efforts to trace Lau De or check on his cell-phones.

5. The Learned Trial Judge instead convicted and sentenced Chun Yin to death simply on the grounds that I do not believe your story without giving any justification. The Court of Appeal, who dismissed Chun Yins appeal, did not produce any grounds of judgment.

6. From the facts stated above, it was shown that the entire process did not demonstrate the highest standard of care and proof when convicting Chun Yin and sentencing him to death.

7. While we respect the rule of law in Singapore, we find that it would be a mistake in executing Chun Yin and this mistake is an irreversible one.
