I would like to get insurances companies to offer reasonable rates for young drivers, both boys and girls. While I appreciate that there are some who act irresponsibly not all young people do. As a mother of a 17 year old who is on the verge of taking his driving test I am dismayed at the cost of insurance for him.
For third party fire and theft insurance cover for a Ford Fiesta that is only worth about £500 the cheapest quote I could find was for £2,830.
The police wonder why so many young people go around with no insurance, I wonder? could this be the reason.
If insurance companies were to offer insurance at a reasonable rate to young drivers then surely this would be a good thing all round. Take my son, as a 17 year old who is on the verge of entering the world of hopefully employment what chance has he got of affording to run a car to enable him to commute to work, this he needs as we live in a rural area and do not have reliable public transport.
So it is left to us as parents to foot the bill. Many parents cannot afford to do this so we condemn our children to a life on the dole if they are not lucky enough to live in a town where they can easily travel to work , and why because no one is pulling the insurance companies into line and giving the many good young drivers a chance. Lets face it if your car insurance came in a £2,500 third party fire and theft you wouldn't even consider it would you.
Lets get behind our young people and help them to make the most of themselves.
Reasonable car insurance to get them mobile both for the ability to commute and to keep them and other road users protected has got to be a start.
