I am outraged at the recent events re: the GSA club (Gay Straight Alliance) at Marshall High School, a high school in the Rochester City School District. I am further outraged that the district does not appear to be doing anything to correct the situation. As a taxpayer/student in the Rochester City School District I request the following:
-That the GSA club be reinstated at Marshall High School immediately. The principal, Joseph Munno, gave away one of his social work positions because the woman in that position ran the GSA club. He could not justify transferring her while that position was still in tact. Without her there the GSA club is without an advisor. Mr. Munno repeatedly harassed this woman and the members of the GSA club.
-The social work position needs to be reinstated. Mr. Munno is breaking special education law by having all of the students (over 90) who have counseling as part of their IEP (individualized education program) assigned to only 1 (one) full time worker. There is no way that these children will receive the social work services they are entitled to. Mr. Munno is willing to jeopardize the educational rights of many students to get rid of the GSA club.
-The Rochester City School District needs to ensure the rights of its LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, queer) students and staff. There are laws that require this. The district itself has policies that ensure equal treatment of LGBTQ students and staff. Teacher contracts state that staff will not be discriminated against based on sexual orientation, among other things. These laws, policies and contracts must be enforced.
-The Rochester City School District must offer GLSEN approved training for its stall and administrators so that situations like this no longer occur.
-The Rochester City School District should make a public effort to encourage GSA clubs in ALL of its high schools.
