Safe Crossing at the Crosswalk on 3500 South and (approx.) 7700 West

In the crosswalk on 3500 South and approx. 7700 West, near Matheson Junior High School in Magna, UT, there have been two (2) instances of school children being hit by vehicles while in the crossing.

This crosswalk is notorious for being a dangerous area for students to cross at, but is the only option for students to get from their neighborhoods of residence to the school in a timely manner.

As citizens of not only Magna, but the entire Granite School District, we must do something about this problem.

Today, 11/15/2010, the most recent victim of this dangerous crosswalk is still in the hospital. The Granite School District claims that they have no power or authority to place lights or a crossing guard at this crosswalk to help protect students while crossing. They say that the decision lies with the Unified Police Department.

If we sign this petition and show both the Granite School District and the Unified Police Department that we, as residents, siblings, parents, students, and concerned citizens care about our students and encourage these entities to take immediate action, change will come and the crosswalk will be made safe.

To the Granite School District and Unified Police Department, we, the Undersigned, demand change in the safety procedures regarding this crosswalk. We do not want to wait until a student is killed or injured more severely than in the past. We request that either better crossing lights, a crossing guard, or some other safety mechanism be implemented at the soonest possible date.

We do not want statements of intentions, we want results.
