1) Hard working apprentices deserve respect
Modern day apprentices are highly educated and enter the trade later than those of previous generations.
2) Apprentices are entitled to a liveable wage
Apprentice electricians are paid as little as $225 a week. In a wealthy, developed nation this is simply unacceptable.
3) Lifting the apprentice completion rate is a national priority
Four in ten apprentices don't complete their apprenticeship. We will have a skilled labour crisis if nothing is done.
4) All Australians should share in the benefits of the resources boom
Unless we take action we risk the benefits of the resources boom will be monopolised by the big mining companies
5) We are committed to building the skilled workforce of the future
Skilling up Australians, especially young Australians and ensuring they can participate in the electrical trades will create a strong, enduring economic legacy for Australia
We, the undersigned, pledge our support for the CEPU's Stand Up for Apprentices campaign.
