Affordable and Safe Student Housing

Dear California Congressional Delegation:
As the current economic climate has made it increasingly difficult for young adults to afford the rising costs of college education, and non-university not-for-profit student housing entities offer a low cost alternative to university owned housing.
As it stands now a quirk in the tax laws allows colleges and universities to use charitable contributions to build and maintain student housing while preventing other not-for-profit student housing entities from doing the same thing.
The Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act would change the tax law to allow these important student housing entities to use charitable donations to build, maintain and improve student housing. This bill will not only increase the quantity of low cost alternative student housing, but also the quality, as donations will be used to improve safety, capacity and energy efficiency of already existing buildings.
The Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act will not only make college more affordable at a crucial time, it will also provide equitable tax treatment for a critically important sector of the student housing market.
We the undersigned students of the University of California, Los Angeles strongly support the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act of 2009 (H.R. 1547/S.781) and call upon our representatives to do the same.
