We,the owners of the American Staffordshire Terrier (Am Staf) dog, request that the United Kennel Club approve the registration of the American Staffordshire Terrier as a breed. We ask this based on the following:
The American Staffordshire Terrier was registered with the American Kennel Club in 1936 as a breed separate and apart from its ancestor the American Pit Bull Terrier;
During the past 74 years, the American Staffordshire Terrier owners have developed their own bloodlines and the dogs of today are bred off those lines, to-wit: X-pert, Tacoma, Ruffian, Crusader lines;
The American Staffordshire Terriers primary function is that of a show dog, performance dog and a companion dog;
The United Kennel Club has registered breeds with far less than 74 years of line breeding history;
The United Kennel Club by its actions of April 30, 2010 that ceased allowing American Staffordshire Terriers to be registered as American Pit Bull Terriers basically admitted that these are separate breeds;
WE believe that the American Staffordshire Terriers and the American Pit Bull Terriers are separate breeds today for all of the above reason and we would therefore ask that our breed be approved as a separate breed with the full privileges of the United Kennel Club that are accorded other breeds.
American Staffordshire Terrier breeders have formed a club to be the UKC parent club of the American Staffordshire Terrier; The National American Staffordshire Terrier Association, NASTA. We are in the process of developing our By-Laws, Constitution and Breed Standard in conformance with the United Kennel Club requirements.
