Dear Mayor Daley:
Northwestern University announced on Tuesday, May 27, that you would address graduates and parents at Northwesterns 150th annual Commencement exercises. In the two days that followed, a number of comments from members of the Senior Class at Northwestern surfaced in various media outlets. Many of these comments either explicitly articulated or at least implied that you were somehow below the standards of a commencement speaker at Northwestern.
We, graduates of the class of 2008 at Northwestern University, find these comments to be unacceptable. They were insulting to you and, by extension, the entire city of Chicago. We most deeply and sincerely apologize to you and the people of your city for our inappropriate conduct. Your office and the city have always been great supporters of our university. Northwestern would not be the outstanding institution it is today without that support.
We hope you will accept this apology and honor us with your address at our 150th Commencement exercises as scheduled.
