Bananas imported into Australia from countries such as Guatemala, The Philippines, Costa Rica and Ecuadora are tainted with Human rights abuses. In Ecuadora, the worlds biggest banana exporter, the average wage for an adult banana worker is $6.50 AU a day which is barely enough to live off of.
In turn, children are made to work the fields (at less that $4 AU a day) to supplement the families income. This is only 60\% of the legal minimum wage for banana workers in Ecuador.
Such abuses of fair pay are not uncommon in these countries due to poor enforcemnet of work laws and until they are improved and workers are paid fair, such bananas shouldnt be eaten.
