We, the undersigned, are outraged by Infinity's decision to change the formatting of 99.1 FM from WHFS's alternative/rock to El Zol's Spanish-language music station.
WHFS has been a staple of the Washington, DC alternative/rock music market for over twenty years. Moreover, Washingtonians have grown to love this station, from its off-the-wall DJs to its eclectic choice of music to its annual HFStivals and HFSmas Nutcrackers.
In those twenty years, WHFS had become one of the most influential rock stations in the country. Every rock concert has an HFS van stationed outside. Studio 819 has become the place to stop by if you're an artist in town. WHFS has become a trend-setter and new breaking ground for struggling artists. For example, Good Charlotte, originally from Waldorf, MD, got their big break as an opening band for HFStival. Eminem, Jay-Z, and other musicians who have never been played on an alternative radio format were welcomed by WHFS.
Although WHFS has had constantly high audience ratings, Infinity's mismanagement of the radio station has caused its ratings to drop. As a result, rock and alternative listeners in the DC area have had to suffer. Changing the format of WHFS can be compared to changing the name of the White House: absolutely ridiculous.
We request that Infinity immediately reconsider this drastic move and to bring back the WHFS we all know and love.
