Raleigh, NC and the Triangle area is home to more than 2 million people, 3 research extensive universities - NC State, Duke and UNC Chapel Hill - as well as NC Central University, Shaw, St. Augustines, Peace, Meredith, Campbell, and many other colleges and universities within an hours drive.
There are a number of large groups putting on large-scale voter registration and education events across the country this fall, especially in so-called battleground states. However, none of those groups has chosen Raleigh or the Triangle for their events. That is why a coalition of student and community groups in the area are coming together to put on a large-scale voter registration event in Raleigh, on or near the campus of NC State University, on October 7th, 2004, the day before voter registration ends in North Carolina.
This petition is to gather support for our event, to convey that support to Pearl Jam who will be passing through the area on that date but is not currently booked, and hopefully to convince them to play for us.
The Triangle is home to more than 100,000 students. Such an event featuring a Pearl Jam concert would draw thousands of young people who could register and get educated on the issues; this would mean thousands of new, educated voters at the polls on election day.
We hope you will support us in this effort.
