Dear Prime Minister Harper and the Hon. Lawrence Cannon,
I am writing to you to express my deep concern over the fact that the Libyan embassy in Canada is still in operation. With the exception of one individual, no one in the Libyan Embassy has publicly renounced their support to Col. Gidaffi.'s regime. They remain actively working for the regime. While numerous Libyan ambassadors have publicly
denounced Col. Gidaffi's regime, the Libyan ambassador to Canada, Abdulrahman Abututa, has remained silent.
Libyan embassies are fronts for Col. Gidaffi's security apparatus. They are often used to collect information on Libyan citizens living abroad, and in some cases, they have even committed violent terrorist acts (for example, the shooting of the British police officer, Yvonne Fletcher, by Libyan embassy officials in 1984). To allow the Libyan Embassy to continue operation in Canada is a complete affront to Canadian values and security. More importantly it is an affront to our men and women serving in the UN mission. The Libyan embassy has had ample opportunity to renounce its support to Col. Gidaffi and has chosen not to. I demand that the Canadian government suspend relations with the Libyan embassy immediately. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned
