Freedom of religion is a hallmark of the United States of America. Furthermore, religious tolerance and respect is a fundamental human right. The U.S. claims to be a nation of equal opportunity and justice for all. However, it is not apparent in this case.

The desecration of Muslims holy book, the Quran (Koran), which occurred on May 2005 in the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo violates fundamental human rights.

What specifically occurred is what Newsweek, a well known American news outlet, stated that: a knowledgeable U.S. government source, said that investigators probing abuses at the U.S. military prison in Cuba found that interrogators had placed Korans (sic) on toilets, and in at least one case flushed a holy book down the toilet.

If this incident had happened to the Jewish holy book, it would have been held as an anti-Semitism criminal offense and a major investigation would have been under operation to reveal and punish those responsible for such a heinous violation.

Instead of a full investigation occurring, regarding the present incident, and those responsible facing the consequences of such violations, Newsweek has announced that the U.S. government will retrieve such statements and doubt that it actually happened.

This is not the first time that the world has heard of horrendous incidents that take place in Guantanamo, a military camp which seems to defy all basic human rights laws and international Geneva Convention laws.

There are presently 1.2 billion Muslims worldwide, and such an act disrespects the beliefs of these people. Muslims believe the Holy Quran (Koran) is the last message from God to mankind; having it desecrated has angered and insulted not only Muslims, but those who have the principles and concepts of religious tolerance, respect and freedom.

We talk about spreading democracy in the Middle East yet what we seem to be doing is setting an example of how to degrade a human being and everything they believe in. We talk about the rights of human beings all over the world yet we seem to be setting the mark of how to deny the rights of a person.

Therefore we request that the citizens of the world, the government of the U.S. and the government of the United Kingdom take action regarding this violation of human rights and to make sure those responsible for these crimes are taken into full retribution.

We also request all Arab embassies and governments to pursue this case and make sure full justice is met and a public apology is given.
