What is Fairtrade?
Fairtrade is a simple way each of us can make a difference through our everyday choices, It's about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.
In addition to fair prices, producers also receive the Fairtrade Premium. How it's spent is voted on democtatically by the people who will benefit from it. Roads have been built, Nurseries and schools have been built and equipped, new tools have been purchased.
Hundreds of towns like ours have signed up to be a fairtrade town.
Why is it good for us?
Every year we send millions of pounds in aid to the poorest countries with not much noticeable effect. This way we directly benefit the producers, their families, and their local community without having to send aid. All we have to do is buy products labelled as "Fairtrade". Simple.
In addition we get recognition in the form of a plaque for our town to let all our visitors know that we are actively doing something to help people help themselves.
