We, the undersigned, strongly feel that the College of Engineering at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University should discontinue the use of the object oriented programming tool Alice.
We feel that Alice provides no substantial learning advantage to the freshman engineering students and that the use of this program consumes time both inside and outside the classroom that is better used for other learning opportunities. Alices drag-and-drop method teaches students very little about the actual concepts of object oriented programming.
We feel that more widely accepted tools such as Visual Basic, MatLab, basic flowcharting and lecture could be used to teach students the basics of object oriented programming, while giving them a solid base in a programming language that will be useful later in their college careers.
We respectfully request that the College of Engineering and the Engineering Education Department at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and Sate University cancel its renewal of Alice for the 2006-2007 academic year.
