CCA Facility Change Process/Sanding Grinding Room

We the students and faculty of the San Francisco campus of the California College of the Arts need to be consulted when major facility changes take place. The students are the reason this institution exists, to teach us skills so that we may go out in the world and have an effect on the future of design.

We cannot learn the skills necessary to do this if equipment, space or access is arbitrarily changed not because of the need of the student body but because of the needs of a few faculty. If large scale change of use is to take place both faculty and the student body should evaluate the change to see how current use of the space is being valued and whether a change will increase the spaces value for CCA's main mission which is to instill skills and creativity.

This has not happened with the re-appropriation of the sanding and grinding room adjacent to the wood furniture studio. This room is integral to the furniture program it is used by every Furniture major and at least half of both the Industrial Design and Architecture majors.

We ask this room be converted back immediately to its former use so that it can be a more efficient use of facility and teaching space. The decommissioning of this room is not acceptable to the students of these departments. We need this room or a replacement space of same size that is enclosed and with proper ventilation for these program to be effective.

Please sign this petition letting the CCA administration know that surveys and feedback must be done with both faculty and the student body before making large scale changes to the facilities that greatly affect our education and productivity.
