GROUNDS
The expansion to DAoC, Trials of Atlantis (hereafter: ToA) failed the Players of DAoC.
First, small guilds and those not rvr-oriented could not effectively participate in ToA. The difficult encounters required a full group of relatively high realm rank players and/or those who know their classes very well and use them to full advantage or it required zerg action. Simply put: ToA is too hard.
Since the objectives and items were scattered over such a large area, there was no set meeting spot and forming groups without a known and respected leader to head things up was all but impossible. Unfortunately for the casual player, these types of players were almost without exception in the high realm rank guilds and had no interest in leading raids for the "unenlightened." This widened the already broadening gap between the casual and hardcore player, and the more the RvR guilds farmed, the wider that gap became.
The RvR guilds began getting insane artifacts and items that gave them abilities far surpassing anything the casual gamer could accomplish, on top of their already impressive realm abilities. ToA, which was originally thought to be a device to even the playing field in RvR, suddenly revealed itself as a mechanism for ruining the enjoyment of the game for anyone not in these RvR guilds as they were farmed repeatedly even when outnumbering the squads by a large margin.
The RvR guilds could make themselves all look like panthers to make class descrimination next to impossible; they could have weapon procs that allow them to hit at or below the 1.5 speed cap with 6.0 speed 2 handers; they could cast faster than anyone ever imagined; their mezzes and roots last longer; their tanks hit harder; their healers heal better; and their resists are higher. The list is virtually endless but the bottom line for the average gamer who plays
