The Discovery Channel is seemingly decreasing its science programming in exchange for metal fabrication reality TV. Fabrication shows such as Monster Garage, American Chopper, American Hot Rod, Big, Motor Cycle Mania to name a few. The original science mandate is diminishing the quality of programming of what Discovery represents to long time viewers.
Viewers who have supported Discovery Channel from its inception feel that they are losing the only science related channel to a mandate that seems to be driven purely by profits.
In a recent poll conducted by a group of concerned viewers advocating the change in programming for The Discovery Channel registered the top complaint of loyal viewers to be indictive that behaviour and attitude of most metal fabrication programming is not suitable for children as it demonstrates crass behaviour and destructive attitudes and have no real education value.
This petition requests that Discovery Channel creates a spin off channel and move metal fabrication shows to this new channel, and re-brand Discovery as a science related channel with emphasism on the popular sciences such as Astronomy, Biology, Electronics, Chemistry and Mathematics and strong focus on education, such as in the spirit of "Daily Planet".

I agree to a certain extent. Having a strong mechanical background, I would like to see the quality of automotive related shows improved to include more technical and physics related content, making these shows more scientific and less "reality show drama

The change in programming on the discovery channel to these dumbed down shows which I'm sure get excellent ratings among brutes, has definately decreased my interest in watching that channel. Although I do thoroughly enjoy the programs such as daily plane

I can't even let my kids watch these shows because it's just not appropriate. It's a sad day when I need to use adult filtering for the discovery channel. What was educational is now just a new WB.
