ELCA Commitment to a Biblical View on Homosexuality

Whereas we, the undersigned, declare the Bible to be the Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit, inerrant in its teachings;

Insofar as the Bible declares homosexuality to be a sin in both the Old and New Testaments;

Insofar as Jesus reaffirmed that marriage is an institution between a man and a woman;

Whereas the Bible teaches that sex outside of this ordained marriage is adultery;

We, the undersigned, do call upon the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to take the following actions:

1. Cease, desist from, and prohibit the ordaining of homosexuals to positions of leadership.
2. Confront any openly avowed homosexuals in positions of leadership, giving them a chance to repent, and if he or she refuses to repent, remove said person from positions of leadership within the church.
3. Cease, desist from, and prohibit the performance of homosexual marriage or civil unions in church owned or controlled facilities.
4. Take action to disfellowship any congregation that refuses to adhere to the biblical teachings regarding homosexuality.
