Peyman Piran is a 21 years old Kurdish student, who was arrested on March 7 by the Revolutionary Courts of Tehran and been transferred to Branch 6 of Qasr prison, a branch known for holding criminals and convicts. Four separate cases have been formed against Peyman, two of which are related to the time period of 1998-2000. Charges against him are: being a member of National Union of Iranian Students and Graduates, actively publishing and participating in student articles, encouraging public uprising, and acting against security of State.
This arrest comes at a time when Peyman's activities have hit a high in forming student unity and establishing strong movement and mobilization in objection to the current dictatorship in Iran. Nevertheless, these arrests and imprisonments can't suppress the students' movement and the will of freedom-demanders.
We the undersigned strongly condemns the arrest of Peyman, and calls upon the international community and human rights watch to take actions for the immediate and unconditional release of him and other captive students and political prisoners in Iran
