I am a student at Columbus High School, and I recently learned of a new dress code rule which requires all students to tuck in their shirts. Frankly, I am shocked. This new rule is putting us one step closer to uniforms and the very thought scares me. I have no idea how this rule was implemented, or who did it. However, consider this: A concealed weapon (or multiple concealed weapons for that matter) may be hidden in the folds of a tucked-in shirt in addition to small weapons being hidden in deep pockets. This new rule is endangering the students of public schools who are simply trying to get a good education. Furthermore, the way teenagers today dress is a way of saying who we are, and I believe tucking in our shirt would be saying who other people want us to be. Also, since the way we dress is saying who we are, I beleive this is a violation of the 1st Amendment to the Constitution which states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances". Freedom of speech, or freedom of dress, as well. I have no problems with any other new rules or previous rules, but this rule is very unsatisfactory to me and many other students at public high schools. Thank You.
