Why is the phrase, "In God We Trust" on our currency? Amendment 1 of the United States Bill of Rights states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." First of all, the phrase "In God We Trust" on our currency is definately an establishment of religion. Second, it's technically inaccurate, we do not ALL trust in God. We are in no way opposed to people having their own religion, but we should not have the government endorse religion on our money. A high court recently dismissed a lawsuit filed on this issue on the grounds that, the phrase refers to a type of "ceremonial deism". They fail to understand the real issue though, it's not that they are supporting Christianity over any other religion, it's that they are promoting a "God" at all. They fail to realize that some of us do not believe in a God, and that some of us may believe in several gods. Whatever we believe, it's not right to thrust this endorsement of religion on us. The first amendment and Thomas Jefferson stated that there should be a "wall of seperation between church and state". Please keep in mind, that Thomas Jefferson was a very religious man, and even he was opposed to the integration of any church into the government. Please, whether you are religious or not, tell the Supreme Court that we do not want the government to endorse religion, or to endorse athiesm for that matter, and to recognize any lawsuits about this issue.
