HELP REUNITE FAMILIES TORN APART BY IMMIGRATION LAWS

Today an estimated 50,000 lawful permanent residents (LPRs) of Indian origin are separated from their spouses. Sign this petition and help these families reunite who might otherwise have to wait for as long as 6 years.

THE ISSUE
It is shocking that that the current provisions in the U.S. Immigration laws have rendered an estimated 50,000 LPRs of Indian origin separated from their spouses. As reported by The Congressional Research Service, The estimated wait for some of these immediate relatives of LPRs may be as long as 6 years. The situation is alarming and despite the Administrations attempts to decrease the backlog of applications for legal immigration, the Los Angeles Times reported on March 30, 2004 more people than ever are facing longer-than-ever delays.

THE SOLUTION
In response to long immigration processing times and the undue hardship of separation on families, the 106th Congress passed the Legal Immigration Family Equity Act (LIFE), P.L. 106-553 and P.L. 106-554, to create a new nonimmigrant V visa. It reunited families by allowing certain spouses of lawful permanent residents (LPRs) and children of those spouses to travel to and from the US while they waited for final completion of their immigration process. The V visa was created as a temporary solution and was available only to beneficiaries of I-130s filed on or before December 21, 2000. In effect, causing the class of eligible beneficiaries to be exhausted by December 21, 2003. But with such a huge backlog of cases and the arduous waiting time, the V visa eligibility period needs to be extended. The extension of the V-Visa program has become obligatory so as to expand its benefit to a larger section of LPRs still waiting to be reunited with their families.

ACT NOW
Creating a more fundamental reform to speed up the processing of immigration applications can be extensive and prolonged. Hence, as an immediate solution, we strongly recommend that the V visa program be extended for an additional five-year term.
