We call upon Your Excellency to take further steps to end the practice of 'honour' killings and to end the way those who commit these crimes are able to obtain reduced sentences or no sentence at all from judges presiding over the cases.
We ask Your Excellency to take measures which will ensure the removal of Articles 97 and 98 from the Penal Code, which allow for a reduction in sentence for those who commit a crime in a fit of fury.
We ask Your Excellency to take measures which will remove Article 340 of the Penal Code, which allows reduction in penalty only if an 'honour' killing is committed immediately on finding the victim in the act of committing adultery.
We also ask you to take measures to ensure the courts hold those who commit 'honour' crimes properly accountable and that sentences handed down to these individuals reflect the true severity of the crimes.
